User-friendly HR tool increases Norway Post and Bring’s ability to deliver.
Norway Post anticipates that focusing on management development and a common performance culture will strengthen the group’s ability to deliver and help them succeed as a leading commercial player in the Nordic region. The solution from CatalystOne produces higher quality HR processes and provides an effective link between performance appraisals, evaluations and manager recruitment.
Over the last 20 years, Norway Post has undergone an extensive restructuring process. From being a public enterprise, Norway Post has re-positioned itself as a strong industrial player. “We had to strengthen the group’s ability to deliver to stay on pace,” says Erik Roth, SVP Organisational Development at Norway Post. “We are focused on what our managers deliver and how they deliver it. Both good results and good leadership are important if we are to succeed over time,” he points out.
Norway Post was looking to make manager “PLUS dialogues” (performance appraisals) an active management tool for the group. “Previously, we worked with paper-based performance appraisals and goal management,” says Roth. “It was time-consuming and did not give us sufficient insight into the group’s management capacity.”
Flexible commercial software from a solid supplier
“The quality of preparations for performance appraisals was variable,” says Roth. “We realised we needed an electronic tool, a simple but flexible standard product that could be adapted to our needs. In addition, I can’t stress enough how difficult it is for a large organisation to implement such a tool. The system had to have a user-friendly interface and be easy to understand.”
After a thorough review of the market, it was the flexibility and usability of the solution from CatalystOne that tipped the scales. “In addition to offering flexibility, CatalystOne is solid enough and large enough that Norway Post could sign an agreement with them,” says Roth.
A simple tool for better performance appraisals
At the beginning of 2013, Norway Post introduced CatalystOne Appraisal Manager as a support tool for their PLUS dialogues for the group’s 1,200 managers and, in 2015, it was implemented for 700 other staff. “Putting preparations into a standardised system will speed up the process as employees become familiar with the system, which will allow us to focus more of our attention on having a good dialogue,” says Roth. “We have also seen an increase in the use of quantifiable goals in our PLUS dialogues with managers,” he continued. “And now that the information is stored electronically, these goals are easier to follow up.”
Easily transferable to manager evaluations
Norway Post recruits 70–90 per cent of its management staff internally and they also had a need for a solid and comprehensive manager evaluation system. Information about goals and results achieved based on performance appraisals is systematically used as input in what Norway Post calls their “Leadership Review”. This helps give the group a systematic and comprehensive assessment of a manager’s competence and development potential, which in turn helps secure the leadership qualities and management capacity the group needs.
“It is important to have a standardised and systematic process, but it also has to be perceived as fair and objective. So we were looking for a system that would prevent manual errors. In addition, we save time compared to the paper evaluation forms we used before,” says Roth. “With close dialogue and follow-up, customised solution proposals and good customer support, CatalystOne met all our needs,” says Roth.
