Solberg & Andersen improves productivity through competence development and performance management.
As a leading supplier of valves and services to the oil and gas industry, Solberg & Andersen is primarily selling their expertise. With a strategic focus on competence development and performance management through employee appraisals, the company also anticipates future benefits in terms of higher productivity.
Solberg & Andersen’s clients have strict requirements for competence and thorough documentation. As a leading supplier to the Norwegian oil and gas industry, the company must be at the forefront of development. “We also need to be confident that we possess the knowledge that sells in the future,” says HR manager Elisabeth Walle. “We have many employees with specialist expertise and must maintain a strategic focus on competence development. It is crucial for us to be able to set clear goals for employee competence.”
“We also had an immediate need to document competence and to easily find individuals with a given expertise. The manual way, without a search tool and with no connection to HR, had to be replaced with a modern, digital tool, which would also improve the quality of our HR work,” continues Walle. “CatalystOne gave us that solution,” she adds.

“CatalystOne’s competence mapping tool (CatalystOne™ CV) was simple and intuitive, and our staff can now update their own CVs. Solberg & Andersen got an integrated system where all information is easily accessible and searchable. The new solution from CatalystOne was easily integrated with their existing HR master data system. “We have received great support and help from CatalystOne, which is always focused on opportunities and solutions,” says Walle.
“It was important to be able to archive all our historical data, including documentation of certifications and courses. The organisation is constantly changing, and when information is linked to individual employees, it is easier to follow them up properly,” says Walle. “A searchable database also makes it easier to document and present expertise to our customers.”
Walle tells that they also wanted to improve the quality of their performance appraisals and implement a common process across the entire company. The idea was to achieve a more systematic personal development and to set relevant performance goals for each employee. “Now we can actively use performance appraisals for employee development, in line with the company’s strategic objectives. And job descriptions are also updated during this process.”
With Appraisal Manager from CatalystOne they established an annual process, with clear performance goals and a good system for both follow-up and self-assessment. “Feedback does something to us!”, Walle points out.
Solberg & Andersen is about to go through a major change process, where the biggest job will be in internal training regarding best practices for performance appraisals. “We have received good advice on how we can achieve this as simply as possible,” tells Walle.
The next step will be to include the other Stream companies in a common solution. Future plans also include several modules for even better follow-up of performance and competence management. “We see great value in highlighting goals and measuring performance. We believe that this process is strongly related to higher productivity in the long term,” says Walle. “I also think it does something with employee motivation. We get a consistent and visible way to work on competence development – and that gives everyone a boost!”
We see great value in highlighting goals and measuring performance and expect future benefits in the form of higher productivity in the long term.
